Terms of Use

On this page

Entold is an online publishing house and reader for classic novels. These Terms apply to entold.com, the Entold reader, and related services we make available (the Service). Typeworks Ltd (company number 17019528), trading as Entold, operates the Service. In these Terms, Entold, we, us, and our mean Typeworks Ltd.

These Terms govern your use of the Service. By clicking Continue when creating an account, you agree to them. Please read them before using the Service and keep a copy. If you do not agree, do not create an account or use the Service. Our Privacy Policy explains how we handle personal information; agreeing to these Terms is not consent to every use of personal information.

The reader and account features covered by these Terms are free. If we introduce paid features, we will explain their price and applicable terms and obtain your agreement before charging you. Creating a free account does not authorise future charges.

Accounts and eligibility

The Service is intended for readers aged 13 and over. You must meet any higher minimum age required by the law that applies to you. If you are not old enough to enter into these Terms yourself, a parent or legal guardian must give permission and assist you where required by law. Do not create an account if a legally required permission has not been obtained. We do not offer accounts for children under 13.

Provide accurate account information and use an email address you control. We verify it with a one-time code. Keep your email account, codes, devices and any passkeys secure; do not share access to your Entold account. You are responsible for activity you authorise, but these Terms do not make you automatically responsible for unauthorised activity outside your reasonable control.

Contact our support team promptly if your information needs correcting or you suspect unauthorised access. Do not create another account to evade a suspension or restriction.

Reading on Entold

Our catalogue focuses on classic works believed to be in the public domain in the territories for which we make them available. Copyright terms differ between countries; a work, translation or edition that is public domain in one country may still be protected in another. We do not represent that every work is public domain everywhere. Availability may vary by location, and we may restrict or remove a title to address rights concerns. Please tell us if you believe a title infringes rights in your country.

Your account provides a private library and saves reading progress. Subject to these Terms, we grant you a personal, limited, non-exclusive, non-transferable licence to use the Service for non-commercial reading. This licence ends as described under suspension and closing accounts. It does not transfer ownership of our software or protected original material.

Nothing in these Terms claims exclusive rights in underlying public-domain works or restricts uses permitted by applicable law, including copyright exceptions. Restrictions on our Service and protected material do not prevent you from obtaining or using a public-domain work independently. Titles may contain historical language or themes that readers find offensive; making a work available does not mean we endorse its views.

Acceptable use

To protect readers and the Service, you must not:

  • use the Service unlawfully or infringe another person's rights;
  • resell access to the Service or commercially exploit our protected material without permission;
  • copy, redistribute or publish our protected software or original material without permission, except where applicable law permits it;
  • use automated tools to scrape or harvest the Service at scale without permission, or collect other users' personal information;
  • bypass access controls, territorial restrictions, rate limits or other security measures;
  • access another person's account, or probe, interfere with or disrupt the Service without authorisation;
  • upload or transmit malicious code, or harass or threaten our users or staff; or
  • impersonate another person or misrepresent your affiliation with Entold.

These restrictions are subject to rights that applicable law does not allow us to restrict.

Availability and changes

We may update, suspend or discontinue a title, feature or the Service for reasonable legal, editorial, security, technical or operational reasons. We will give reasonable advance notice of a material reduction or discontinuation where practicable, explain the change, and take reasonable steps to minimise disruption. Urgent security or legal issues may require immediate action.

Titles and features may change, and uninterrupted access or permanent storage of your library and progress is not guaranteed. This does not affect any obligations or remedies that applicable law imposes on us. You can stop using the Service at any time.

Privacy

Our Privacy Policy explains personal information, retention and your rights. Our Cookie Policy explains cookies and similar browser storage. These notices describe our practices; they do not waive your privacy rights or replace consent where it is required.

Suspension and closing accounts

You may stop using the Service at any time and request account closure by emailing our support team. We may suspend or restrict access, or close an account, for a serious or repeated breach of these Terms, a material security or legal risk, or a legal requirement. We will act reasonably and proportionately, considering the seriousness of the issue.

Where practicable and lawful, we will explain the reason and give you an opportunity to resolve the issue before closing your account. We may act immediately where necessary to protect the Service or others. You can ask our support team to review a decision.

Closure ends your access to account features. We handle deletion and any necessary retention under our Privacy Policy. Closure does not remove rights or liabilities that have already arisen. Provisions about intellectual property, feedback permissions, liability and disputes continue to apply to the extent relevant after closure.

Intellectual property

Typeworks Ltd or its licensors own the rights that legally exist in the Service's original software, design, branding, editorial additions and selection or arrangement of material. Protection applies only where, and to the extent, recognised by law. Digitising a public-domain text does not by itself give us ownership of that text. No rights in our trademarks or branding are granted except as needed to use the Service.

To report a rights concern, email our support team with the subject “Copyright complaint”. Identify the work and the relevant Entold URL or material, explain the rights you own or are authorised to represent and the territory concerned, and provide your name and contact details. Include supporting information and confirm that your report is accurate to the best of your knowledge.

We will review reports and may request clarification, restrict access or remove material while investigating. Please provide only information needed to assess the complaint. This process does not limit any legal remedies available to you.

Feedback

You retain any rights you have in feedback or suggestions you send us. You grant us a non-exclusive, worldwide, royalty-free licence to use, reproduce and adapt that feedback to operate, develop and improve the Service, including through our service providers and any successor to the Service. This permission continues after your account closes; it does not require us to use your feedback or compensate you.

Share only material you have the right to provide. Avoid including confidential third-party information. Personal information in feedback remains subject to our Privacy Policy.

Third-party links and services

The Service may link to independent websites or services. Their own terms and privacy notices govern your use of them. A link does not mean we endorse their content, and we do not control their availability or practices. This does not exclude responsibility we have under applicable law for our own actions or the providers we use to deliver the Service.

Warranties and liability

You retain all rights and remedies that cannot lawfully be excluded or limited, wherever you live. These may include rights concerning reasonable care and skill, digital content and services, and remedies for defects. Subject to those rights, the Service is provided on an “as is” and “as available” basis. We do not promise that every transcription or feature will be complete, error-free, uninterrupted or suitable for your particular purpose.

Where applicable law permits, we are responsible for loss or damage that is a reasonably foreseeable result of our breach of these Terms or failure to use reasonable care and skill. Loss is foreseeable if it is an obvious consequence or was contemplated by you and us when the contract was made. We do not exclude foreseeable loss merely because it is described as indirect or consequential.

The Service is for personal, non-commercial use. To the extent permitted by law, we exclude liability for business losses such as lost profit, revenue, business opportunity or business interruption, and for loss that was not reasonably foreseeable. We are not responsible for a failure caused by an event outside our reasonable control to the extent we could not reasonably have prevented or mitigated its effects; any mandatory remedies remain available.

Nothing excludes or limits liability for death or personal injury caused by our negligence, fraud or fraudulent misrepresentation, or any other liability that cannot lawfully be excluded or limited. These Terms do not limit statutory privacy remedies.

Changes to these Terms

We may revise these Terms for reasonable changes to the Service, legal requirements or how we operate. For material changes, we will explain what is changing and give reasonable advance notice through the Service or by email, including when the revised Terms take effect. Urgent legal or security changes may take effect sooner, with notice as soon as reasonably practicable. We will obtain fresh agreement where required by law.

Changes do not retrospectively remove accrued rights or change the terms applicable to an existing dispute. If you do not agree to a change, you may stop using the Service and close your account before it takes effect. The date above identifies this version.

Notices and governing law

For questions, complaints or legal notices, email our support team. Please describe the issue and how we can contact you. We will try to resolve complaints fairly. Contacting us first is encouraged but is not a condition of exercising your legal rights. We may send service notices to your account email or display them in the Service. This does not replace any legally required method of serving proceedings.

These Terms are governed by the laws of England and Wales. If you are a consumer, this choice does not deprive you of mandatory protections under the law that applies in your country of habitual residence. The courts of England and Wales have non-exclusive jurisdiction; you retain any right under applicable law to bring a claim in your local courts or use another mandatory dispute-resolution process.

General

We may transfer our rights and obligations to another organisation if this does not materially reduce your contractual protections, and will notify you of a transfer affecting your account. You may not transfer your account or contractual obligations without our agreement, except where applicable law permits it.

If a provision is unenforceable, the remaining provisions continue so far as legally possible. A delay in enforcing a right does not waive it. These Terms govern our agreement about the Service, but do not exclude statements or obligations that the law makes binding. No person other than you and us has contractual enforcement rights under these Terms, except a permitted successor or where the law requires otherwise.
